Hypocrites ,Characteristics of Hypocrites,
Question/Answer

Praise be to Allaah.

A hypocrite in Islam is one who saw Islam; accepted its principles; embraced it; went along with it, but when his life style and preferences were challenged, Islam had failed with him.  He knowingly wouldn't follow Islam because it would violate a certain life style that he adopted, ego, or standard that is too important to him, even though it directly violates Islam.
In the beginning of the Quran Allah (SWT) divides the whole of mankind into three groups: believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites. Allah (SWT) describes very briefly the characteristics of the believers. Then disbelievers are mentioned in only two verses. It is then followed with very extensive detail of the hypocrites. Hypocrites are described at great length because they are the most dangerous members of society. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of this group .Notice that this grouping of mankind is based on beliefs and practices irrespective of color, creed, origin, language, and national or territorial affiliations.
Let us now some of the characteristics of hypocrites as described in Surah al-Baqarah Allah (SWT) says: Al-Baqarah # 8,9
"Among people there are those who say we believe in Allah (SWT) and the Day of Judgement, they are not believers, they are trying to cheat Allah (SWT) and the true believers. Unfortunately, they are not deceiving anyone but themselves, and they are not even aware of this."
Note that although they are claiming belief in Allah (SWT) and the Day of Judgement, there is no mention of belief in the prophethood of Mohammad (SAS). This was the case of the Jews of that time. Hence, any belief without the belief in the prophethood of Mohammad (SAS) is unacceptable. They are so lost that they cannot even understand their own actions.
Allah (SWT) has described three characteristics of hypocrites. Allah (SWT) says:Al- Baqarah # 10
"In their hearts there is a disease and Allah (SWT) has increased their disease. There is a painful punishment for them because they lie".
Hence, lying is not an insignificant sin.In our society lying is considered a minor sin. According to above verse, lying can transform a believer into a hypocrite.
Allah (SWT) describes lying along with idol worshipping in the Quran:
“Save yourself from the evil of idol worshipping and lying.” Allah (SWT) describes three distinct indicators of these hypocrites. Allah says: Al- Baqarah # 11,12
" When it is said to them don‟t create mischief in the world, they say that we are the peace makers, in fact they are indeed the mischievous ones, but they do not perceive it."
Secondly, Allah (SWT) further says: Al-Baqarah # 13
" When it is said to them believe like the other people believe they say, “Shall we believe like the foolish believe?” Verily, they are the fools, but they do not understand."
It is clear from this that the test of correct belief is to have belief like the belief of the companions of Prophet Mohammad (SAS). Allah (SWT) has so much respect for the companions of Prophet Mohammad (SAS) that He has made this a criteria to test the sincerity of belief. Similarly, Allah (SWT) honored the companions in an earlier verse where Allah (SWT) says that the hypocrites are trying to cheat Allah (SWT) and his believers.
Allah describes a third indicator of hypocrites as follows. Allah (SWT) says: Al-Baqarah # 14,15,16

"When they fall in with those who believe they say “We believe!” When they go apart to their devils they declare, “Look we are with you! Verily we did but to mock (or pretend).”
Allah (SWT) does mock them, and leave them to wander blindly in their rebellion. They are those who purchase ignorance at the price of guidance. So their commerce will not prosper neither are they guided."
On the contaray, let us describe the fate of believing men and women on the Day of Judgement. Allah (SWT) says in Surah Al- Hadid # 12" On the Day of Judgement you will see the believing men and women with a guiding light in front of them and on their right hand side. These are good tidings for you, that you will reside in gardens below which rivers flow. They will reside there forever. It is indeed a great triumph."
Several points need to be mentioned. We noticed that believing men and believing women are treated alike for the rewards for their good deeds. There is light on their right hands because they are given their account on the right hand. It is also customary to have light in front for travelling. This light in front of them is there as a result of their good deeds. There are several sayings of Prophet Mohammad (SAS) to illustrate this fact.
Anas (RU) narrates that Prophet Mohammad (SAS) said: “Give glad tidings to those people who go to the Masjid during the dark nights. They will have all of the light on the Day of Judgement.”(Ibn Majah)
Ibn Omar (RU) narrates that Prophet Mohammad (SAS) said:“Those who offer their prayers regularly and conscientiously, will be rewarded with a guiding light on the Day of Judgement; Those who don't will not have any light and they will be with Qaroon, Haman, and Phiraun.” (Musnad Ahmad)
Abu Saeed(RU) narrates that Prophet Mohammad (SAS) said: “Whosoever recites Surah Kahf on Friday will have a guiding light on the Day of Judgement which will extend from his feet up to the Heavens.” (Tabarani)
Abu Hurairah (RU) narrates that Prophet Mohammad (SAS) said that: “Whosoever recites even one verse of Quran it will transform into guiding light for him on the Day of Judgement.”(Imam Ahmad)
Hypocrisy is a serious sickness and a great crime. It means making an outward display of Islam whilst inwardly concealing kufr. Hypocrisy is more dangerous than kufr (disbelief) and the punishment for it is more severe, because it is kufr mixed with Islam and its harmful effects are greater. Hence Allaah will put the hypocrites in the lowest level of Hell, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them[al-Nisaa’ 4:145]

Similarly all good deeds will provide guiding light to believers. In contrast to all this, Allah (SWT) describes the situation of Hypocrites. Allah (SWT) says: Al-Hadid # 13,14,15,
" On the Day of Judgement hypocrite men and women will say to the believers to please wait for us so that we can make use of your light. It will be said to them go back and look for the light. A wall will be drawn between the believers and hypocrites. Inside this wall will be the Mercy of Allah (SWT) and outside the wall will be the misery. Hypocrites will say loudly to the believers “Were we not with you?” The believers will reply, “Yes indeed, but you tempted one another, hesitated and doubted, while your vain desires charmed you till the order of Allah (SWT) arrived. The deceiver deceived you concerning Allah (SWT):” So this day no ransom can be taken from you nor from those who disbelieved. Your home is the fire, that is the proper place for you and it is a terrible end to your journey."
According to Ibn-e-Kathir, all believers and hypocrites will be given guiding light on the Day of Judgement while crossing the bridge. The light of the hypocrites will be soon extinguished. In this way Allah (SWT) is mocking them as they used to mock Allah (SWT) and his obedient servants. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: Al- Baqarah # 15"Allah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong- doings to wonder blindly."
Note that the hypocrites were given some light initially, because they did some good deeds for showing off.
Hence, we conclude that sincere deeds will result in a permanent guiding light and hypocrisy will be mocked at on the Day of Judgement. Ibn Kathir has mentioned a very long Hadith in which he relates that each believer will have light according to his deeds. Some will have light like a mountain, some like palm trees, and some in length equal to the height of a person.
Allah (SWT) further says: Al-Hadid # 17
" Remember that Allah (SWT) makes the dead Earth alive again. Allah (SWT) in this way makes His verses clear to you so that you can understand."
Here Allah (SWT) is reminding us that just as He can revive the dead earth, similarly He can revive the dead hearts of the hypocrites if there is sincere repentance.

Characteristics Of Hypocrite Muslims
The hypocrites are always confused, always planning deceit and plots. Although outwardly they appear to be with the believers, inwardly they are with the kaafireen. So sometimes they are inclined towards the believers and sometimes they are inclined towards the kaafireen.

“(They are) swaying between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those; and he whom Allaah sends astray, you will not find for him a way (to the truth — Islam)”[al-Nisaa’ 4:143 – interpretation of the meaning]

Because of the corruption of their hearts, the hypocrites are the most averse of mankind to the religion of Allaah, as Allaah tells us about them (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when it is said to them: ‘Come to what Allaah has sent down and to the Messenger (Muhammad),’ you (Muhammad) see the hypocrites turn away from you (Muhammad) with aversion”

[al-Nisaa’ 4:61]

The dealings of the hypocrites revolve around their own interests. When they meet the believers, they make a show of belief and loyalty, in order to deceive the believers and as an action of dissimulation, hoping for whatever good and war-booty they have. But when they meet their masters and chiefs, they say, we are with you in your shirk and kufr. Allaah says concerning them (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe,” but when they are alone with their Shayaateen (devils — polytheists, hypocrites), they say: “Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking

Allaah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doing to wander blindly”[al-Baqarah 2:14-15]

The hypocrites have many characteristics, the worst and most serious of which is disbelief in Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when it is said to them (hypocrites): ‘Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad, Al-Ansaar and Al-Muhaajiroon) have believed,’ they say: ‘Shall we believe as the fools have believed?’ Verily, they are the fools, but they know not”[al-Baqarah 2:13]

Among their characteristics are enmity and envy (hasad) towards the believers, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If good befalls you (O Muhammad), it grieves them, but if a calamity overtakes you, they say: ‘We took our precaution beforehand’ and they turn away rejoicing”[al-Tawbah 9:50]

Among their characteristics is mockery of Allaah, His Messenger and His religion. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allaah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were mocking?’

Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed”[al-Tawbah 9:65-66]

Among their characteristics is that they spread corruption on earth, with disbelief, hypocrisy and sins. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when it is said to them: ‘Make not mischief on the earth,’ they say: ‘We are only peacemakers.’

Verily, they are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not”[al-Baqarah 2:11-12]

Among their characteristics are slander and lies. Allaah tells us about them (interpretation of the meaning):

“They swear by Allaah that they are truly, of you while they are not of you, but they are a people (hypocrites) who are afraid (that you may kill them)”[al-Tawbah 9:56]

Among their characteristics is that they enjoin what is evil and forbid what is good, and they are stingy with their wealth. Allaah says concerning them (interpretation of the meaning):

“The hypocrites, men and women, are one from another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islam has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allaah’s Cause) alms]. They have forgotten Allaah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Faasiqoon (rebellious, disobedient to Allaah)”[al-Tawbah 9:67]

Among their characteristics are greed and avarice:

“And of them are some who accuse you (O Muhammad) in the matter of (the distribution of) the alms. If they are given part thereof, they are pleased, but if they are not given thereof, behold! They are enraged![al-Tawbah 9: 58 – interpretation of the meaning]

Among their characteristics are those which were described by the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

“There are four (characteristics), whoever has all of them is a complete hypocrite, and whoever has some of them has some element of hypocrisy, unless he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a treaty, he betrays it; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he quarrels, he resorts to insults.”(Narrated by Muslim, 53)

Among their characteristics is a concern with appearances and fancy speech whilst they are inwardly corrupt. Allaah says concerning them (interpretation of the meaning):

“And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allaah curse them! How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path?”[al-Munaafiqoon 63:4]

If the kuffaar are obvious enemies from without, then the hypocrites are hidden enemies from within. They are more harmful and more dangerous to the Muslims, because they mix with them and know their situation. Allaah has decreed that the ultimate destiny of the kuffaar and hypocrites will be in Hell:

“Surely, Allaah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell”[al-Nisaa’ 4:140 – interpretation of the meaning]

But because of the seriousness of the harm they cause, the hypocrites will be in the lowest level of Hell, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire”[al-Nisaa’ 4:145]

Because the danger posed to the Muslim ummah by the kuffaar and hypocrites is so great, Allaah commanded His Messenger to strive against them:

“O Prophet (Muhammad)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them; their abode will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination”[al-Tahreem 66:9 –

The difference between a hypocrite and a normal Muslim who sins, is that a hypocrite adopts an unacceptable life style and actions, and insists on following it, while a normal Muslim knows that he is wrong, tries to resist doing sins, but unfortunately sometimes, he still falls into sinning due to immaturity or physical weaknesses.

In a nut shell, this is what a hypocrite is in Islam.  A hypocrite is a "Muslim".  He is not an apostate (murtadd), nor is he a polytheist or idol worshiper (mushrik), nor is he an atheist (mulhid).  A hypocrite does declare Islam as his religion, and in some cases even prays to GOD Almighty and fasts the month of Ramadan.  Not everyone who Prays to Allah Almighty, however, is a good Muslim.   Allah Almighty said:

"So woe to the worshipers Who are neglectful Of their Prayers, Those who (want but) To be seen (of men), But refuse (to supply) (Even) neighbourly needs.  (The Noble Quran, 107:4-7)"

"The Hypocrites - they think they are over-reaching God, but He will over-reach them: When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold God in remembrance;   (The Noble Quran, 4:142)"

Those who are neglectful of their Prayers that are considered as hypocrites are ones who pray to only gain recognition by men, and refuse to do good.  They do not connect spiritually with Allah Almighty when they pray 5 times every day, because the sole purpose of Praying in Islam is to Worship Allah Almighty alone throughout the day, and to constantly stay focused and purified from sins.

Hypocrites are obviously not purified nor cleansed from sins, even if they pray.   That is why Allah Almighty cursed them, because they are spiritually "neglectful" of their Prayers.

Very Important Note:  While Allah Almighty will still punish even the sincere Muslims who neglect their Prayers out of physical laziness, but these Muslims by far are never considered hypocrites.  There is a difference between a hypocrite who wants to be seen by men and gain worldly recognition through his prayer, and one who is physically lazy, but yet, is still a very good and sincere Muslim who tries his/her best to please Allah Almighty in his actions and life style.  Allah Almighty also said:

"The Hypocrites, men and women, (have an understanding) with each other: They enjoin evil, and forbid what is just, and are close with their hands. They have forgotten God; so He hath forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites are rebellious and perverse.  (The Noble Quran, 9:67)"

So as we can see, the hypocrites enjoin evil and forbid what is just.  Sincere Muslims, even if they don't Pray regularly (5 times everyday), don't fall into that category, because their daily actions and life style are far from enjoining evil and forbidding what is just.

Question;
"Will all Muslims make it to Heaven?"

Answer:
So to answer the second question , no, not every "Muslim" will make it to Heaven.  Allah Almighty's Standards are very tough.  Heaven is not for everyone.  Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran promised Hell Fire as the "destination" to both idol worshipers and polytheists (such as pagans and trinitarians), and to the Muslim hypocrites:

"And that He may punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Polytheists men and women, who imagine an evil opinion of God. On them is a round of Evil: the Wrath of God is on them: He has cursed them and got Hell ready for them: and evil is it for a destination.  (The Noble Quran, 48:6)"

In fact, the Muslim hypocrites will be in the most painful level of Hell.  They are worse than the disbelievers themselves in the Eyes of Allah Almighty:

"The Hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire: no helper wilt thou find for them;  (The Noble Quran, 4:145)"

I pray to Allah (SWT) that Allah (SWT) makes us sincere Muslim and provides us with guiding light permanently on the Day of Judgement. Ameen.
