The ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is the Day of ’Arafah, since it is on this Day the pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of ’Arafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord. In fact, one hadeeth says that ‘Hajj is Arafah’. This means Arafah is the sum and substance of Hajj.
* Yaumul Arafah is also significant because this amazing ayah was revealed on this day:
الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا
….This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion….(Surah al Maa’idah 5:3)
As per the above ayah, Arafah was the Day on which Allah perfected His religion, completed His favours upon His beloved Prophet Muhammad (sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam), and approved Islam as a way of life!
Imam Ibn Kathir in his Tafseer says:
“Imam Ahmad recorded that Tariq bin Shihab said, “A Jewish man said to `Umar bin Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.’ `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, `Which is that verse?’ The Jew replied: الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا
`Umar replied, `By Allah! I know when and where this verse was revealed to Allah’s Messenger . It was the evening on the Day of `Arafah on a Friday.”
Subhanallaah!
* Yaumul Arafah is also significant because Allah swore by this Day in Surah al Burooj. And, you know Allah swears by nothing except that which is great and mighty! So the Day of Arafah is great significant:
“By the sky containing great stars.
And [by] the promised Day.
And [by] the witness and what is witnessed” (Surah al Burooj 85: 1-3)
It was reported from Abu Hurayrah (radhiyallaahu anhu) that the Prophet (sal-lal-laahu-aalihi-wa-sallam) said: “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of ‘Arafaah, and the witnessing day is Friday.” (Narrated by at-Tirmidhi and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.
* It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (sal-lal-laahu-aalihi-wa-sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah, so he said:
“It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” (Related by Muslim, Hadeeth no. 1162)
* Likewise, the Prophet (sal-lal-laahu-aalihi-wa-sallam) said:
‘There is no day on which Allaah frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ’Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ’Arafah), and then He reveals before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking.” (Related by Muslim, Hadeeth no. 1348)
Imam at-Tirmidhee – rahimahullaah – said, “The People of Knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the day of ’Arafah, except for those at ’Arafah.” (Tirmidhee: 3/377)
Please note that everybody must know the day that coincides with the day of Arafah and fast according to the moon sighted in their own countries and not according to that of Saudi Arabia.
According to one authentic hadeeth ‘Hajj is Arafah’. Therefore, the Day of Arafah is of great importance and significance. We need to at least take care of the following things on the Day of Arafah, Inshaa’Allah:
1. Fasting on the Day of Arafah:
Fasting is highly encouraged and recommended for those not going on hajj.
According to an authentic hadeeth: “Fasting on the Day of Arafah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming year”. (Sins here means ‘minor sins’)
2. DU’AA OF ARAFAH: Saying this du’aa very often:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:
أَفْضَلُ الدُّعَاءِ دُعَاءُ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ وَأَفْضَلُ مَا قُلْتُ أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّونَ مِنْ قَبْلِي
لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ
لَهُ المُلكُ ، وَ لَهُ الحَمدُ ، وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَدِيرٌ
“The most excellent dua is the du”a on the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said, is “There is nothing that deserves to be worshiped in truth except Allaah, He is Alone and has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things.'” Refer this

3. Don’t forget the Tahleel, Takbeer, Tahmeed and Tasbeeh:
We need to say these great adhkaar as many times as possible by us on the day of Arafah, and also on the days of Tashreeq (11, 12 and 13th of Dhul Hijjah) Inshaa’Allah.
Tahleel is to say “Laa ilaaha il-lal-laah”
Tahmeed is to say “Alhamdulillaah”
Tasbeeh is to say “Subhanallaah”.
Takbeer is to say “Allahu Akbar”.
During the occasion of Dhul Hijjah we say the Takbeer in its extended format which is as follows:
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, laa ilaaha il-lal-laahu Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa Lillaahil-hamd
Allah is Great! Allah is Great! Allah is Great! There is none worthy of worship and obedience except Allah. Allah is Great! Allah is Great! And all Praise belongs to Him alone!
4. Seek forgiveness from Almighty Allah:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:
“On this day, Allah, the most Exalted, descends to the nearest heaven, and He is proud of His servants on the earth and says to those in heavens, look at My servants, they have come from far and near, with hair disheveled and faces covered with dust, to seek my Mercy. Even if their sins are as much the sand or the froth of the sea, I shall forgive them.”
Even though we encouraged to say Sayyidul Istighfaar twice every morning and evening (on a daily basis) we must make it a point to say this Istighfaar more often and more seriously on this special day, InshaaAllah.
And also, we must make it a point to attend this grand banquet so that we can grab the opportunity of a life-time!
May Allah give us the Tawfeeq and Hidayah to reap the blessings of Arafah to the utmost of our capacity. Aameen. May Allah accept our humble deeds and forgive us of our sins.

O Allah, relieve every distressed one,
O Allah, return every traveler (to his home),
O Allah release every prisoner,
O Allah, correct every wrong in the affairs of the Muslims,
O Allah, cure every sick one,
O Allah, ease our poverty by Your wealth,
O Allah, change our evil state to a good one through Your excellent state,
O Allah, relieve us of our debts, and help us against poverty, Surely You have power over all things.
Ameen......
رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ
رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ
Rabbi habli milladunka zurriyatan tayyibatan innaka sameeud dua.
Rabbi laa tazarni fardan wa anta khair al wariseen
رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّاب��ُ
Rabbana laa tuzigh qulubana ba'da iz hadaytana wa hablana milladunka rahmah innaka antal wahhab
رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا بِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ وَاتَّبَعْنَا الرَّسُولَ فَاكْتُبْنَا مَعَ الشَّاهِدِينَ
Rabbana aamanna bima anzalta wa ittaba'nar rasula faktubna ma'ash shahideen
حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ
Hasbiyallahu laa ilaha illa hua alayhi tawakkaltu wa hua rabbul arshil azeem
رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ
Rabbijalni muqeem as salaata wa man zurriyati rabbana wa taqabbal dua
رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا
Rabbana hablana min azwajina wa zurriyatina qurrata a'yunin wa ja'alna lil muttaqeena imama
رَبِّ أَنْزِلْنِي مُنْزَلًا مُبَارَكًا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْمُنْزِلِين��َ
Rabbi anzalni munzalan mubarakan wa Anta khair al muzileen
رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ
Rabbi a'uzubika min hamazaatish shayadin wa a'uzubika rabbi an yahdurun
رَبَّنَا اصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا
Rabbanasrif anna azaaba jahannama inna azaabaha kaana gharama
رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Rabbana takabbal minna innaka antas sameeul aleem
إنما أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّه
Innama ashku bassi wa huzni ilalaah
