THE REWARD OF FASTING ASHOORA AND MINOR SINS
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “For
fasting the day of ‘Aashooraa’, I hope that Allaah will accept it as
expiation for the year that went before.” (Reported by Muslim, 1976).
This is from the bounty of Allaah towards us: for fasting one day He
gives us expiation for the sins of a whole year. And Allaah is the Owner
of Great Bounty.
DOES THIS INCLUDES THE MAJOR SINS?
No. The scholars of Islam have stated that what is meant is the forgiveness of the minor sins only and not the major sins.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: The expiation of purification,
prayer, and fasting Ramadaan, ‘Arafah and ‘Ashoora’ applies to minor
sins only. Al-Fataawa al-Kubra Vol. 5
WHAT ARE THE MINOR SINS IN ISLAM:
Minor sins are acts which are displeasing to Allah but for which no
specific punishment or severe warning has been issued. In this case, a
Muslim's conscience and heart help him to know that an act is sinful.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Righteousness is good
character, and sin is that which wavers in your heart and which you do
not want people to know about." (Muslim)
Minor sins are not,
however, to be taken lightly, as disobeying Allah is always a serious
matter. Allah says: “You counted it a little thing, while with Allah it
was very great.” (Qur'an 24:15)
Minor sins can easily lead
someone to commit a major sin, and repeatedly committing a minor sin
will change its status to that of a major sin.
Furthermore,
habitual sinning causes a Muslim to lose faith and disregard the
commandments of Allah. In the Qur'an, Allah says: “Nay, their hearts
have been sealed by the sins they have accumulated.” (Qur'an 83:14).
Practicing good deeds serve as expiation for minor sins; as long as the person doesn’t commit major sins.
Allah says, “If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do,
We shall remit from you your (small) sins, and admit you to a Noble
Entrance (i.e. Paradise).[ An-Nisa’ 31 ]
The Prophet (peace
and blessings be upon him) said: The five daily prayers, Juma’h prayer
till Juma’h prayer, Ramadan till Ramadan expiates everything between
them, if you avoid the major sins.” [ Muslim 233]
Ash-Shaykh
Abdur Rahman Al-Barrak (may Allah preserve him) said, “ The words if you
avoid the major sins show the condition for having the minor sins
forgiven. The minor sins aren’t forgiven unless the major sins are
avoided. “
Some examples of minor sins are:
1. Looking at something prohibited
2. Stealing something, which doesn’t earn the legal punishment. i.e the value of something less than a quarter dinar.
3. A mother lies to her son and says come here and I will give you something. When he comes she doesn’t give him anything.
